There’s Something about Mary K!

Standard

Good day VFJ,

This F/W 16 – S/S 17 has been amazing to watch garments come down the runways and Pop Up Shops, alike.

The last couple of years Mary Katrantzou has kept me on the edge of my seat with her graphic textile like designs and now her ABC clutches (on my covet list).

Mary Katrantzou was born in Athens in 1983, to an interior designer mother and father who worked in textile design.  Graduating from her BA in 2005, Katrantzou shifted her direction from textile design to womenswear with a focus on print. And, I’m glad she did. Mary became interested in the way that printed textiles can change the shape of a woman’s body and so then went on to graduate with a MA in Fashion from Central Saint Martins with distinction.

Katrantzou’s graduating show in 2008 displayed her signature style. It was themed around trompe l’oeil prints of oversized jewelry featured on jersey- bonded dresses. These pieces created the illusion of wearing giant neckpieces that would be too heavy in reality. She also designed real jewelry made out of wood and metal that were exact replicas of the prints. From the beginning her work has been about perception and perspective and channeling that through a visual language that is used to design desirable clothes that are flattering.

Previous seasons have seen collections based on perfume bottles, artisan blown glass, interiors and objects of Art, vintage postage stamps and landscapes, to name a few, while keeping the printed image central to her aesthetic. Print, being so visual, has allowed her to create her own distinctive world but in the visual language that she creates, colour texture and shape are equally important to print; creating something new, something innovative and something that people will appreciate for its intelligent design aesthetic, as well as its function. Each print is designed around the garment, and the garment simultaneously around the print.

I told you, there’s most definitely something about Mary K!

Carry on….

XOXO,

AK

KEYS101: Time. Use your time in the best way you can” Colossians 4:5

Time is our most precious resource. It’s far more important than money. We can get more money, but you can’t get more time. We only have a certain amount allotted to us in this life. We can’t make time, we can’t borrow time, we can’t save time, we can’t extend time. We can only use it. We all have the same amount of time every week: 168 hours. If we don’t learn to manage our time well, we cannot manage anything else in our life, because our time is our life.

God is watching to see how we manage our time on this earth to determine what he’s going to have us do in eternity. He’s giving us a test, because our life on Earth is preparation for eternity. One of Satan’s strategies is to get us so busy doing unimportant things that we don’t have time for the important things in life, and we don’t spend any time preparing for eternity. Satan doesn’t have to get us to sin. If he can’t get us to be bad, he’ll just get us to be busy.

I’m working on this everyday.

Prioritizing. And, simplifying.

I need to simplify my life and eliminate distractions, so God can use me. Don’t try to do it all. Do what matters most!

Peace & Blessings,

AK

ChaCha

Standard

Hey VFJ,

What can I say about this amazing talent…I’ve had the pleasure to meet ChaCha through Deborah Bond- she has been a mentor to ChaCha for some time now.

Upon meeting ChaCha at my event at Bossa, I was drawn in by her infectious smile, humility and Diana Ross bedroom eyes…Pictured above at RAWartist showcase.

I’ve had the pleasure to have her walk in my latest RAWartist runway show at the historic Howard Theatre.

Her presence is calming, but her artistry is a “quiet storm”! actress, model and musician.

Check her first single out simply titled “Daddy“..her voice is raw, lyrics are intense…poetry in motion to my ears.Pictured wearing her Daddy’s jean jacket…true story!

Each verse unveils the story of a girl turned woman trying to understand her place and the adversity faced along the way through the eyes of a broken man…her Daddy. She’s not only a face of hip hops future-but this single will resonate with all the daddy’s girls turned women around the world looking for answers.

I’m looking forward to seeing this performance live. Check ChaCha out at

Later junkies,

XOXO

Best and Worst Dressed Emmy’s 2016

Standard

It’s been awhile Vintage Fashion Junkies…I’m back, Summer is over!

Best —

Kristen Bell looked breathtaking in this floral Zuhair Murad gown. Ball gowns can sometimes swallow petite figures, but not Kristen’s. I vote best red carpet look in her career. And, my followers know I’m not a big fan of florals, but this bouquet is a hit! I have a few in my fall wardrobe all ready… Vintage BJ, not blow job (but, Betsey Johnson) either.

Kerry Washington in Brandon Maxwell- his SS17 collection was sweet at NYC and the custom-made creation, paired with simple black sandals, featured two cutouts underneath the bust along with a floor-skimming cape. Antique diamond drop earrings by Fred Leighton added a finishing touch to the simple and stunning look. KW sizzled in her LBD, but her hair was also a hit for us wiggy wonders. Longtime stylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew gave Washington a head full of rockstar-worthy curls accomplished with clip-ins from her line, TSD Hair Extensions, check her out on Instagram.

Sarah Paulson also a Emmy winner for her role as Marcia Clark stepped out in a long-sleeve, fully embellished Prada gown with a plunging neckline.Custom earrings by Wilfredo Rosado. The short sleek hair pulled the look all together! And, the arm candy wasn’t bad- Marcia Clark, herself.. But, we know who the real lady of the hour is the dame, Holland Taylor.

Taraji P Henson with her custom Edie Parker clutch (covet list) on the red carpet along with her Vera Wang yellow gown.  And, more Vera Wang Collection with the long-sleeve bronze sequin gown with a plunging keyhole neckline and a jaw-dropping hair transformation- Bobs are us.

Angela Bassett is a woman of a certain age and it’s called “timeless or ageless” your pick… In Christian Siriano. Danielle Brooks of OITNB walked the SS17 in a similar frock for Lane Bryant by C. Siriano

Padma Lakshmi The “Top Chef” host was tops on the red carpet in this silver Naeem Khan number that looked like liquid metal. She can back it up on me…. I mean her back looks spectacular.

Tracee Ellis Ross stood out in this simple yet sophisticated Ralph Lauren gown.

If you’re not hip to  “Blackish,” you’re lost. And now even moreso since Tracee Ellis Ross has just made history by receiving an Emmy nomination for her role (as surgeon, mother, wife, and daughter-in-law “Rainbow”) on the show, Ross has become the first black woman in 30 years to do so. The last to achieve this same recognition was Phylicia Rashad in 1986 for her role as Clair Huxtable in The Cosby Show. And, recognizing this rare accomplishment, Ross has been making sure to honor the women who came before her with #WCWs on Instagram.

Laverne Cox of “Orange is the New Black” had her bombshell moment on the carpet in this Naeem Khan number. Talk about “solid gold”. One of my best red carpet moments for LC.

Worst-

Claire Daines, “Orange” you glad you didn’t win. Get your money back for the tan and kill your stylist while you’re at it. There was something off about Claire Danes’ look: her tan, the material of her Schiaparelli dress, or the weird front that looked like it could be a nipple-

Anna Chlumsky…what can I say good about this -I love volume, her legs a killer; but this dress just had too many elements, from the off-the-shoulder neckline to the odd hem to the long train to the wacky brocade fabric. Shit, is she hiding her freaking new born baby under there, perhaps she thought she had to pay for an extra seat to the Emmy’s! I think this a case of why didn’t the designer tell the client this is just wrong- on so many levels. Poor C. Siriano, one fail out of many good designed of the night, isn’t too bad!

Well, that’s all folks!

xoxo,

AK
